The Authority You Already Possess

Have you ever walked up to a locked door, stood there for a moment, and then realized the key was already in your pocket?

It’s an odd feeling. For a few seconds you’re stuck… until you remember you already have what you need.

A lot of believers live their spiritual lives exactly like that.

They’re walking when they could be driving.
Asking permission when they already have authorization.
Living like spiritual renters when they’re actually heirs.

The reality might surprise you:

Most Christians have no idea what they’ve already been given.

The Badge You’re Already Wearing

Think about security badges at restricted facilities.

Some badges open certain doors. Others don’t. The difference isn’t the person wearing it—it’s the authorization they carry.

Two people can stand at the exact same door.
One walks right in.
The other can’t even get the door to budge.

Why?

Because one has the credentials.

Jesus made an incredible statement after His resurrection in Matthew 28:18:

All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Then He immediately said something just as important:

Therefore… go.

That little word therefore changes everything.

It means the authority Jesus received wasn’t meant to stay with Him alone.

He was passing it on.

He was handing the keys to His followers.

Mark 16 says it this way:

These signs will follow those who believe.

Not the super-spiritual.

Not the professionals.

Not the people with theological degrees.

Those who believe.

If you believe, that includes you.

Born Into the Family

The name of Jesus isn’t a religious phrase we tack onto the end of prayers.

It’s a family name.

Think about how kids act in their own house.

They don’t knock on the fridge.

They don’t ask permission to sit on the couch.

They don’t walk up to their dad and say, “Excuse me sir, may I humbly request a sandwich.”

They just say:

“Dad… I’m hungry.”

Why?

Because they belong.

Yet many believers approach God like nervous guests.

We whisper prayers.
We hesitate.
We wonder if God is too busy.

But Jesus said something powerful in John 16:23:

Whatever you ask the Father in my name, He will give it to you.

That’s not guest access.

That’s family access.

Romans 10:13 says:

Whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Acts 4:12 says:

“There is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

1 Corinthians 6 says we are washed, sanctified, and justified in that name.

When you know you belong to the family, you stop acting like a trespasser.

You start living like a son or daughter.

Baptized Into His Identity

In the early church, baptism wasn’t a casual religious event.

It was dangerous.

When Peter preached at Pentecost and three thousand people responded, being baptized in the name of Jesus meant publicly declaring allegiance to Christ.

For many Jewish believers, that meant rejection from family.

For others, it meant persecution.

Roman authorities sometimes watched baptism sites. Some believers walked into the water knowing they might be arrested the moment they came up.

And yet they did it.

Joyfully.

Why?

Because they understood the power of the name they were stepping into.

Paul explains it in Galatians 3:27:

All who have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.

Think of it like putting on a new set of clothes.

Everything that name represents becomes yours.

It’s similar to marriage.

When someone takes their spouse’s name, they also take on everything connected to that name:

• the family
• the home
• the inheritance
• the legal standing

When you were baptized into Christ, you took His name.

When He died, you died with Him.

When He rose, you rose with Him.

When He sat at the right hand of the Father, you were seated with Him (Ephesians 2:6).

Why?

Because you carry His name.

Your Power of Attorney

Jesus didn’t just save us.

He commissioned us.

In John 14:13, Jesus said:

Whatever you ask in my name, that I will do.

Think of the name of Jesus like a power of attorney.

Imagine someone hands you their debit card and sends you to the store.

You wouldn’t walk to the register whispering:

“I really hope there’s money on this card.”

That would be ridiculous.

The power of the card isn’t based on your bank account.

It’s based on theirs.

When we pray in Jesus’ name, we aren’t drawing on our own righteousness, wisdom, or strength.

We’re drawing on heaven’s account.

The problem isn’t that God doesn’t want to answer.

Sometimes it’s simply that believers don’t realize the authority they already carry.

James says it plainly:

You have not because you ask not.

The Relationship That Activates Authority

There’s a fascinating story in Acts 19.

Some Jewish exorcists tried to cast out demons using Jesus’ name.

But they didn’t know Jesus personally.

They said:

“We command you by the Jesus that Paul preaches.”

The demon responded:

“Jesus I know.
Paul I know.
But who are you?”

That situation didn’t end well for them.

Why?

Because the name of Jesus isn’t a magic formula.

It’s relationship authority.

Those men were trying to borrow authority they didn’t possess.

But when you know Christ personally, you carry His authority legitimately.

Here’s a question worth thinking about:

Heaven knows your name if you belong to Christ.

But does hell know your name?

When believers understand their authority, entire cities can change.

That’s exactly what happened in Ephesus when people burned millions of dollars worth of occult books and the city shifted spiritually.

The religious leaders didn’t tell the disciples to stop talking about Jesus.

They said:

Stop using that name.

Because that name changes everything.

It heals.

It saves.

It breaks chains.

It drives out darkness.

Living in Victory

Christianity isn’t about barely surviving until heaven.

Jesus never said:

“Hang on until you get out of here.”

He said:

Occupy until I come.” (Luke 19:13)

That means living with purpose.

Walking with God daily.

Praying with authority.

Loving people boldly.

Bringing light into dark places.

The name of Jesus is above every name.

Above fear.

Above sickness.

Above depression.

Above addiction.

Above whatever battle you’re facing today.

Whatever name that problem carries, there’s a name that stands far above it.

When you understand who you are in Christ…

When you grasp the righteousness you’ve been given…

When your mind is renewed to God’s Word…

When you begin walking in the authority Jesus restored…

Everything changes.

Fear loses its grip.

Condemnation loses its voice.

Darkness loses its authority.

Because wherever you go, you carry the name of Jesus.

Into your home.
Into your workplace.
Into every conversation.
Into every challenge.

That name has been entrusted to those who believe.

So here’s the question:

Do you believe?

Because if you believe…

The authority already belongs to you.

And if it belongs to you…

It’s time to start living like it.

The key is already in your pocket.

Now it’s time to unlock the door.
